- "IRWY is an interesting episode in that it gives Angel exactly what he thought he wanted in S3. Or rather, what he thought he needed to be with Buffy: his humanity. He's human again. And, at the end of the day, it's still not enough to keep Buffy and Angel together.
Typically with Tragic Romances, there's one obstacle that just can't be overcome...but if it could, then the two could be together. With B/A, that obstacle, up until this point, had been the fact that Angel's a vampire. That was the major reason for Angel calling things off in S3, it led directly to the uber-badness of S2, it was the main reason Buffy cited for not getting together as early as S1's Angel. In IWRY, that obstacle goes poof! Presumably, as the cliches tell us, once the obstacle is gone, the happily-ever-after will commence.
But it doesn't. Because that vampire "obstacle" is a front for the larger issues. The fact that even a handful of episodes into his own show, Angel's developing on his own independently from Buffy, and the person he's becoming is at odds with the person Buffy is. They don't complement each other. And Angel has reached the point where his own personal journey is more important to him than being with Buffy. However, the fantasy of a tragic romance is more attractive, and Angel appeals to that fantasy when he asks the Oracles to restore him to his vamp self.
...
Remember that Angel (the episode) established the Angel-as-Buffy's-protector trope which is a fantasy that both Buffy and Angel buy into, even though the reality shows that Angel isn't exactly her protector. However, when Angel feels that his human relationship with Buffy isn't working out, he clings onto the fantasy of having been her protector.
That way, he doesn't have to admit that he gave up his humanity because he felt incapable and weak, especially compared to his super-powered girlfriend. He can, instead, say he did it for love. Because he needs to be able to protect her, and he can't if he's not a vampire. That way, his act becomes a sacrifice rather than a face-saving gesture."

| Une "analyse" en une photo et une phrase des couples de Buffy, qui sont associés à des bateaux (en anglais, "ship" signifie "navire", d'où le parallèle ) et c'est hilarant ! A voir absolument ! On retrouve Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Riley, Buffy/Spike et dans les commentaires, vous avez aussi Buffy/L'immortel, Buffy/Parker, Buffy/Faith et Buffy/Alex | |
