'Avengers' Actor Jeremy Renner On Joss Whedon, Hawkeye, And Their 'Angel' Connection

The official announcement of Jeremy Renner's involvement with "The Avengers" came just two short months ago, but whispers of his involvement predate the announcement by almost a full year. In fact, Renner's relationship with the major Marvel franchise goes back even further — at least, his relationship with director Joss Whedon does.

"I've known Joss actually for a long while from doing a little arc on 'Angel,' which was fun," Renner told MTV News, referring to Penn, a centuries old vampire who eventually adopted the serial killer moniker "The Pope."

Based on his past experience working with Whedon, Renner feels confident that the director has a solid grasp on "The Avengers" and the greater Marvel Universe.

"He's got a very good sensibility," he said. "It's a world he knows very well. He kind of gave me an idea of where the character is going. It's all grounded in reality, which is great. It's a character, Hawkeye, that isn't really a superhero — he just has a high skill set. That's something I can also connect to. I just have to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow!"

In addition to his lack of superpowers, the character won't be seen running around in the blue-and-purple tights that he's known for in the comic books.

"You can kind of tell with Scarlett [Johansson]'s character [in 'Iron Man 2'], it's going to be more of a uniform . . . and not a big purple, comics sort of thing," Renner said previously. "That's why I think it's more palatable to audiences — there's almost a sense of reality to these superheroes."

Will Renner's past experience with Whedon help his "Avengers" performance? Tell us what you think in the comments and on Twitter!

La CW recrute dans le Whedonverse !!! ^^

Citation :

'Torchwood' Adds 'Buffy' Producer, Eyes Debut Date

Exclu: Starz' upcoming U.S. edition of Torchwood is adding some behind-the-scenes talent with experience on fan-favorite shows.

Whedonverse regular Kelly Manners is joining the eagerly anticipated series as a producer. Manners had producer credits on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse and other shows.

Also, though Starz has not yet announced a Torchwood: The New World premiere date, sources say the network currently expects to introduce Captain Jack stateside in July (that could still change, mind you, so don't, like, plan your vacation schedule around it or anything). Production begins on the show's 10 episodes next month.

Here's some more new credits for Torchwood, each with plenty of geek-TV cred:

-- Bharat Nalluri - Director - Life On Mars; Outcasts
-- Nathaniel Goodman - Lead DP - Heroes; Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
-- Gregory Melton - Production Designer - The Mist; The Walking Dead
-- Skip Schoolik - Post-production Producer - The Walking Dead; Angel
-- Shawna Trpcic - Costume Designer - The Cabin In the Woods; Angel; Dollhouse
-- Todd McIntosh -Make Up - Buffy; Memoirs of a Geisha
-- Hunter M Via - Film Editor - The Walking Dead; The Mist; The Shield

Citation :
Jane Espenson and Drew Z. Greenberg are going to write Syfy’s pilot-in-development Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) — based on the classic British TV show.

Espenson and Greenberg have plenty of Geek TV cred, with Espenson having written for Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse and Greenberg having worked on Dexter and Warehouse 13. Oh, and both wrote for a little show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

For those who haven’t heard of this quirky-titled project, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) is about a detective who’s murdered while investigating a case. He returns as a ghost, visible only to his former partner, and helps him solve crimes from beyond the grave.

It’s the ultimate mismatched buddy cops — one alive, one dead!

Syfy nabbed rights to Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) last May from ITV. Bringing on top writers like this duo is another step forward to bringing this show to the small screen.

What do you think of this project? And will there be a Ghost Hunters crossover?

+ Writing Series for Adults +

http://826laadultwriters.eventbrite.com/

Trois scénaristes de BTVS/ATS seront présents à ce panel :

Citation :
David Fury is a two-time Emmy-award winning writer-producer whose credits include the television series 24 and Lost, as well as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel. He also directed episodes for the latter two series, and appeared on several others, including the Buffy musical “Once More with Feeling” and the Angel puppet episode “Smile Time.” More recently, he was seen in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog. Other writer/producer credits include Dream On, The Jackie Thomas Show, Pinky and the Brain, and House of Buggin’. He also scripted a story, “The Glittering World,” for the graphic novel Tales of the Slayer.

Citation :
Jane Espenson has written for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, The O.C., Gilmore Girls, Dollhouse, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, and HBO's upcoming A Game of Thrones among other series. She also co-wrote and executive-produced the Emmy-nominated Battlestar webisodes, and co-created Syfy's Warehouse 13. She is currently proud to be writing episodes for Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Citation :
Drew Z. Greenberg has been a writer and a producer on several television shows, several of which were actually seen by the public. His credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Smallville, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Dexter. He's currently a co-executive producer on Syfy's Warehouse 13. He knew he was destined to work in television when, as a child, he used his Star Wars action figures not to recreate battles or lightsaber fights, but rather to act out the opening titles sequence of a Star Wars TV series he envisioned in his head.

+ THE WOMAN BEHING THE WHEDONVERSE +

(Les femmes derrière le Whedonverse)

Even casual fans of Joss Whedon know that strong female characters are important to him. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Echo from Dollhouse, and Zoe from Firefly are only a few examples. What casual fans may not realize is that women behind the scenes—Whedon’s fellow writers and producers—have also helped make his storylines beloved to so many fans. They include Jane Espenson, Marti Noxon, Maurissa Tancheroen, and Felicia Day.

Jane Espenson

News en vrac Jane-espenson

Jane Espenson showed an interest in TV at an early age, submitting a spec script for M*A*S*H when she was still a teenager. It was not accepted, but the one she wrote for Star Trek: The Next Generation as a graduate student at Berkley was. She wrote or co-wrote 23 episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, including humorous ones like “Band Candy” and “Pangs,” and pivotal ones like “I Was Made To Love You” and the penultimate “End of Days.” She has also worked with Whedon on Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse, as well as writing for Gilmore Girls, Caprica, and Torchwood, among others.

Marti Noxon

News en vrac Marti-noxon

Martha “Marti” Noxon wrote twenty-two episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starting in the show’s second season. She was promoted to co-producer in the third season, around the same time that Espenson came on board as a writer. As Whedon focused on Angel, Noxon was given more production authority in seasons four and five, and was executive producer for the show’s final two seasons. Since the final televised season of Buffy, she has written and produced for Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Mad Men, and more.

Noxon is one of the more controversial figures among Whedon fans. Buffy’s supernatural threats had always been a metaphor for the journey to adulthood, but in later seasons, the show dealt more directly with real challenges, such as depression, addiction (albeit to magic), and attempted rape. Perhaps most divisive was the death of a beloved character, one who happened to be another character’s romantic partner. As pop culture blogger Sady Doyle writes in the article “Ellen Ripley Saved My Life”: “[People] almost literally set the Internet on fire with intense personal criticism of Marti Noxon, which lasted for years . . . This is another thing about Strong Women: We like them considerably more when they’re fictional, rather than, say, running a TV show.” (Check out the whole article—it has a lot more about the significance of Whedon’s work.)

Joss Whedon himself responded publicly to the criticism, saying online, “Marti . . . and I shaped this year very carefully, and while we made mistakes (as we do every year), we made our show. We explored what we wanted to, said what we meant. You don’t have to like it, but don’t think it comes from neglect.”

On a lighter note, you may recognize Noxon as the woman with the parking ticket in the Buffy musical episode, “Once More with Feeling.”

Maurissa Tancharoen

News en vrac Maurisa-tancharoen

As the 2008 writer’s strike dragged on, Joss Whedon ventured into uncharted territory, both musically and commercially, with his serialized web musical, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog. One of his co-writers on this project was Maurissa Tancharoen, an Occidental College graduate who also sang and acted in the project. In the end, Dr. Horrible won a Streamy Award for Best Comedy Writing for a Web Series.

If you’ve heard Commentary! The Musical, an extra on the Dr. Horrible DVD, then you’ve heard “Nobody’s Asian in the Movies,” in which the Thai-American Tancharoen hilariously skewers Hollywood racial stereotypes. Dr. Horrible is not the only web project for which this multi-talented woman has sung, however; she also lent her voice to The Legend of Neil and The Guild. (She can even be seen dancing in the video for “(Do You Wanna Date My) Avatar.”)

“Mo,” as she is nicknamed, picked up her pen again for Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse—in which, of course, she also had a bit part and wrote and sang music. Now she writes for Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, along with her husband. Oh, that’s right: He happens to be Joss Whedon’s bother Jed, who she married in 2009.

Felicia Day

News en vrac Felicia-day

No discussion of women writers and Joss Whedon is complete without mentioning Felicia Day. No, she’s never written for him—although she did appear in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog, and Dollhouse. However, after her role as Dr. Horrible’s innocent idealist Penny, she went on to write and act in The Guild, based on her own experiences in gaming culture. She found herself again on the cutting edge of web entertainment, as The Guild won a pioneering distribution deal with Microsoft. Recently, after drumming up months of Twitter buzz about a “mystery project,” she announced that she had written and starred in Dragon Age: Redemption, a six-part web series based on the Dragon Age video game series. It will be released later this year.

Obviously, Joss Whedon has a healthy interdependence with his female creative collaborators. They have helped make him what he is, and their work with him has been a springboard for many of them. Whatever the future may hold for Whedon, we can look forward to more quality entertainment from his former co-creators, and further partnerships with talented women.

'Buffy' Reunion: Joss Whedon's Surprising Response to Young Female Fans

News en vrac Untitl12

From left: Drew Goddard ("The Cabin in the Woods"), Marti Noxon ("Fright Night"), Douglas Petrie ("American Horror Story"), Rebecca Sinclair ("90210"), Steven S. DeKnight ("Spartacus"), David Fury (Fringe), creator Joss Whedon ("The Avengers"), Jane Espenson ("Husbands," "Once Upon a Time") and Drew Z. Greenberg ("Arrow")

The "Avengers" director trades rapid-fire quips with the whip-smart staff who penned the supernatural cult favorite starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

eassemble the staff of cult favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the conversation quickly devolves into a barrage of rapid-fire quips. Asked what he learned from his experience in the writers room, for instance, show creator Joss Whedon deadpans, "Do it all yourself."

If Buffy were on the air today, however, he wonders whether network executives would encourage his staff to "make her more passive."

David Fury notes that Buffy, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, probably would have to be more likable. "We don't like it when the characters are angry with each other and have conflicts," he says, mimicking a network exec.

Between poses, the group -- still close a decade later, though years sometimes pass between reunions -- reflects on the early signs of connecting with the supernatural drama's fans at Comic-Con and on Internet message boards; a British imposter who claimed to be part of a showrunners exchange program and conned them into paying for pricey lunches; and the show's longer-term impact on the writers' collective careers.

Says Drew Z. Greenberg, "Every meeting I go into, Buffy is still the first …" -- but before he can complete his thought, Rebecca Sinclair jokingly interjects, "… thing he says."

Douglas Petrie demonstrates the stunned look he gets when encountering female fans of the show, and Whedon reveals the reaction he often receives from a younger demographic. "I've been meeting a lot of beautiful young women who say, 'My mom loved that show,' or, 'I wasn't allowed to watch it because I was too young,'" he says, adding: "I'm like, 'Shut your bitch mouth!' I'm very gracious. Can you put that in italics to show that I'm joking?"

The enduring legacy of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer writers' room

It's hard to talk about this far-reaching, amorphous thing we call "nerd culture" without bringing up Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the supernatural TV series that made its creator, Joss Whedon, a pop culture immortal, and made an indellible mark on television, genre storytelling, and pop culture at large. It's been more than a decade since the show aired a new episode, but we're still talking about its capacity for powerful character moments in the midst of fantastical plots, its focus on strong women, its ability to weave serialized storytelling into self-contained episodic narratives, and its sense of humor. The show influenced legions of writers, including writers we haven't discovered yet, but droves of fans who are also creators isn't the only way to measure Buffy's influence.

As Buffy took shape, a core group of writers started to emerge on the show, and though it was augmented by new additions in later years, much of that core group remained to steer the ship right up until the series finale. For many of those writers, Buffy was either their first major writing job or their first writing job, and the environment of Whedon's writers' room left an impression on them that they would take with them to other projects. The Buffy writers' room has been described by some of those writers as a place where risk-taking and trying new things was encouraged, where writers felt comfortable branching out and refining their skills. As a result, it was an incubator of talent that's still rewarding us to this day.

So, just as we did earlier this year with Star Trek: TNG, we're taking a look at the enduring legacy of the Buffy writers' room by examining what its core group of writers did after Buffy. To help get a better picture of this, we gathered quotes from these writers, and reached out to a couple of writers ourselves. We asked prolific Buffy writer and Warehouse 13co-creator Jane Espenson what she thought the legacy of the room was, and she reflected on both the show's tone and on the DIY enthusiasm that came from Whedon.

Citation :
"I think Buffy has been a huge factor in what TV looks like now – the mixture of tones in shows like Orange is the New Black feels Buffy-like to me, the recognition that humor creeps into our darkest moments. And for me personally, it has been a ticket onto the staffs of some amazing shows where I’ve been able to apply the skills I learned there," she said. "Beyond that, though, I think it’s been Joss’s continued mold-breaking and entrepreneurial instincts that have been the biggest influence. I wouldn’t have had the courage to team up with Brad Bell to create Husbands if I hadn’t had the example of Dr. Horrible and other Joss post-Buffy projects. And, of course, Brad and I built Husbands around a reason to tell the story – the first lesson of the Buffy room."

We also asked Arrow and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Drew Z. Greenberg, who joined Buffy in season six after having been a fan of the show for years.

Citation :
"On a micro level, Buffy changed the paradigm for women in genre television. It was suddenly a lot easier to sell people on the idea that you could have a woman as a lead character, and she could be smart, kickass, funny, strong, flawed, dangerous and awesome (basically, all the things we were used to seeing in male characters and very much not used to seeing in female characters). It’s easy to take it for granted now, but in 1997 when Buffy started, that wasn’t entirely common," he said. "But in a larger context, I think Buffy established that it was okay to have a show which was both fun and intelligent – that you could be engrossing, mainstream, pop entertainment while still having something to say, still having a specific point of view about the world. To me, that’s what we all took with us from the show, and I think it’s an example that’s been followed by lots of people who never even worked on Buffy: just knowing it could be done gave everyone license to create other fun shows with a voice if they wanted to. And as legacies go, I think that’s a pretty good one."

Check out the legacy of the Buffy writers' room, as reflected by the careers of 10 of the writers who populated it, in the gallery below.

“Doug and Marco captivated our members around the world with their continuation of the story of Matt Murdock in 'Marvel’s Daredevil,' and we can’t wait to see how they and Drew will introduce the full Defenders team to our global audience,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.

“We're incredibly excited to be able to bring our four street level heroes together in an epic tale woven by Doug and Marco whose work on ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ speaks for itself,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. "They write and produce not only great action and adventure, but also the heart and touch of humor that's makes us Marvel. With the inclusion of Drew Goddard, we've got a team that's as formidable as the Defenders themselves."

“This is the big one. Four amazing casts, four amazing series, now all in one amazing story,” said showrunners and Executive Producers Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to deliver the show that both we and the fans have been waiting for.”

“Marvel’s The Defenders” will star Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and Finn Jones, all reprising their roles as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, respectively.

Douglas Petrie, Marco Ramirez, Drew Goddard, and Jeph Loeb will serve as Executive Producers on “Marvel’s The Defenders.” The series is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.
