Charisma Carpenter is frighteningly qualified to host a new series about people who fought back against attackers: She escaped a serial rapist 20 years ago and gave police a key piece of evidence against him. The "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" veteran has signed on to host the Investigation Discovery series "I Survived Evil," which is a working title. The series will begin filming its 10-episode first season this month. Carpenter was a 22-year-old former San Diego Chargers cheerleader when she and two male friends were attacked by an armed police officer, Henry Hubbard Jr., while swimming at San Diego's Torrey Pines State Beach in 1991. They resisted Hubbard, and Carpenter's two friends were shot and seriously wounded. People magazine wrote about the attack in 1992. It described how Hubbard, wearing a nylon stocking over his head, ordered Carpenter to tie up one of her friends. Then he ordered her to bind the other man's hands with a belt. When she refused, he pressed a pistol to her temple. Eventually, he "handed her his heavy-duty flashlight and knelt to do the job himself," People wrote. One of Carpenter's friends lunged at the gunman, and the other joined in. Hubbard shot both men, but he also accidentally shot himself in the left hand, then fled. Hubbard was arrested when he and his wife went to an emergency room hours later, seeking treatment for his injury. He claimed he had been jumped, but investigators were suspicious because he had sand on his clothes. He also had bite marks that matched the teeth of one of the men who fought back. A key piece of evidence was his police-issue flashlight -- with his name on it -- which Carpenter had brought from the beach.
Hubbard was sentenced to 56 years in prison for the attacks and a series of rapes and robberies. "The fact that Charisma has personally lived through the tragic nightmare of being attacked – and thankfully, is willing to share her ordeal with our viewers – makes her the perfect host for 'I Survived Evil,'" said Henry Schleiff, president and general manager of Investigation Discovery. "In addition to being a face that her loyal 'Buffy' fans will recognize, Charisma adds an important layer of depth and perspective to this series that only a survivor truly could." "I Survived Evil" is produced by Cineflix (I Survived) Inc. for Investigation Discovery. Nick Godwin and Simon Lloyd are executive producers for Cineflix. For Investigation Discovery, Pamela Deutsch is executive producer, Sara Kozak is senior vice president of production and Schleiff is president and general manager.

"To host", c'est "présenter", me semble-t-il. | |

| Le concept de l'émission me semble intéressant. Je suis contente qu'elle puisse mettre son expérience au service de ce genre de témoignages... Une nouvelle interview/article de CC qui en parle et présente un peu le tout : - Citation :
Charisma Carpenter Opens Up About How She Survived Evil, Plan to Tell Others' Tales I Survived Evil is not just the title of the new Investigation Discovery series that Charisma Carpenter will be hosting — it’s also a declaration the actress herself can make.
Back in 1991, years before she traded barbs with Buffy, Carpenter and two friends were swimming at Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego when they were violently attacked by Henry Hubbard Jr., then a 29-year-old police officer.
During the encounter, Hubbard, brandishing a gun, ordered Carpenter to tie up her male friends. But Carpenter refused, affording her companions opportunity to jump and overpower Hubbard, ultimately leading to his capture and arrest — even as the young men suffered non-fatal bullet wounds along the way.
Carpenter meanwhile held onto the police-issue flashlight Hubbard used, to help seal his conviction for that assault which, when combined with a string of others, earned him a 56-year prison sentence. Though Carpenter has never openly discussed the harrowing incident, “Now I’m in a place where I could. I have enough distance — and a lot of therapy — between then and what happened and now,” she tells TVLine. “It’s not as fresh. It’s not as painful.”
Investigation Discovery’s I Survived Evil, which starts production later this summer with an eye on a 2013 bow, will chronicle similar true stories of ordinary people who successfully warded off attackers. That Carpenter, given her own such scare, was approached to host the series was pure coincidence. “I don’t think [the producers] knew,” she ventures. “And when I told them, they were like, ‘This makes perfect sense. We want you to be even more a part of the process.’”
Indeed, Carpenter — who currently stars on ABC Family’s The Lying Game — hopes her new gig will not explore just the surviving but also the evil at hand. Reflecting on Hubbard’s string of sexual assaults and violent attacks, she cannot help but wonder, “What happens in a life that a person can get to a place where it’s a good idea to become a serial rapist? I mean, I have a child, so how does a kid go from normal to not?”
Though Hubbard revealed in testimony that he grew up with an alcoholic father, “It seemed like his life was back on track” at the time he unleashed his reign of terror, Carpenter recalls. “He was top of his class in police academy, he was married with a baby on the way…. From an anthropological point of view, I’m very curious what happened.”
Carpenter may get her answers, since I Survived Evil‘s very first episode will delve into the nightmare she lived through at the Torrey Pines beach. While she herself will not participate in any reenactment of that assault — “It’d be a little creepy,” she admits — Carpenter does plan to have the cameras “walk along that very beach” with her and, hopefully, address Hubbard himself.
“I’m interested in a sit-down, to ask him myself questions [I have],” she says. “Whether or not Hubbard will let me [I don't know], but my producers are interested, though they’re treating it very delicately. I think they’re worried about me, but really, I’m OK with it.”
Or at least she at this instant believes she is. “You don’t really know until you’re in a chair opposite someone like that… but I think I’m OK with it,” she clarifies. “I just want to say to him, ‘What happened to you? Tell me your cautionary tale.’” Subsequent installments of the 10-episode series will cover two stories apiece. “It’s about empowerment, about victims who take fate into their own hands and rescue themselves, or seek justice and find it,” Carpenter says of I Survived Evil‘s mission. “It’s about heroes, stories of survival. And happy endings.”

Charisma Carpenter: You can have a good life even after something terrible happens
Charisma Carpenter was just 21 when she escaped a brutal attack by a serial rapist who tried to murder two of her friends.
The Buffy The Vampire Slayer star was swimming at a San Diego beach when a masked man appeared from the shadows and threatened her with a gun.
‘I thought he was going to rob us,’ says Carpenter, ‘but it became clear his intention was to rape me and have me tie up the two men.’
Her friends, Arthur Gracia and Aldo Ochoa, were in the water when they heard the actress scream and ran to her aid. The gunman ordered Carpenter to tie Gracia’s hands with a belt while he restrained Ochoa.
The quick-thinking Carpenter looped the belt loosely, giving Gracia the chance to attack the assailant. In the struggle, Gracia was shot in the chest and Ochoa was seriously wounded when a bullet went through his stomach.
The gunman fled after being shot in the hand, while the blood-soaked trio fled to a convenience store and raised the alarm.
During the attack, the gunman had given Carpenter his torch, which she held throughout her ordeal. It was to prove a key piece of evidence in the case. When she handed it over to authorities, they discovered it was a police-issued torch with the name ‘Hubbard’ written on it.
Shortly afterwards, police officer Henry Hubbard Jr was arrested for the attack and linked to a string of others. In court he pleaded guilty to eight violent sexual assaults and two attempted murder charges and was sentenced to 56 years in jail.
‘He’ll be out in half that time due to good behaviour – that’s an interesting phrase,’ says Carpenter. ‘I’m appalled. I don’t feel justice was served. He raped a 13-year-old girl. He asked her if she was a virgin, raped her, then asked if she liked it – he’s very sick.
Anyone who could do something like that shouldn’t be allowed out into society ever again. I don’t know how they could be rehabilitated.’
Prosecutors described Hubbard as a ‘clever and dangerous predator’ who coolly and rationally sought out his victims. During a two-month spree in the summer of 1991, Hubbard searched for couples on the beach late at night, then forced the woman to bind the man’s hands before raping her.
While his crimes had made the local news, Carpenter was unaware there was a rapist on the loose. After the attack, people asked her why she put herself in danger.
‘I remember those comments 20 years later,’ she says. ‘Was it the smartest thing to do? No, but I was young and we weren’t the only ones out that night. Those comments came from a place of fear, concern and stress. I didn’t allow them to cause any grief.’
While Carpenter was physically unharmed, it left her suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. ‘I had anxiety and panic attacks. I’d wake up in the middle of the night feeling afraid,’ she says. For the first three years after the attack she says she didn’t deal with it ‘at all’.
‘I just put one foot in front of the other. Eventually I had counselling, which was life-saving. I was emotionally broken. I have a good life today and a lot of that is down to counselling – it gave me strength.’
However, the ordeal has cast a long shadow. During her time making TV show Angel, on which she appeared from 1999 to 2004, Carpenter would set off for work under cover of darkness.
‘I’d go to work at 4am and would have to leave my house to get to my car in the middle of the night,’ she explains. ‘I’d have to talk myself down from the panic that would set in that came from thinking someone would attack me.
‘It would be impossible to have an experience like that and for it not to leave long-lasting impressions. It’s like if you’re a pedestrian and a car swerves off the road and hits you. It doesn’t mean you never walk along a street again but you’re more aware and alert.’
Carpenter provides a detailed account of her attack on the first episode of her new TV series, I Survived Evil. The series features stories of other women who have survived horrific ordeals.
‘By sharing my story I want to offer people who might have had similar experiences reassurance,’ she says. ‘I’ve had so many blessings and bigger and better things have happened to me that have overshadowed that night. You can have a good life even after something terrible has happened to you.
