"Endure" has all the makings of a suspenseful crime thriller.
There's Emory Lane, played by Judd Nelson, the hardened detective struggling with the pain of his ailing wife; Devon Sawa's Zeth Arnold, the rookie cop from Seattle looking to prove himself; and the young woman who opens the film, kidnapped and terrified and waiting to be saved.
Written and directed by Lakeland's Joe O'Brien, and produced by NFocus Pictures' Jim Carleton and Rob Tritton, the thriller was shot in Lakeland and Bartow in just 16 days last spring and looks more expensive than its $1.2 million budget. The Ledger has been following the making of the Lakeland-based film for the past several years. It makes its debut to the public at the Gasparilla Film Festival in Tampa tonight.
The film begins and climaxes in the woods of Saddle Creek Park.
After a photograph of the woman, played by Clare Kramer, is found inside the remains of a fatal car crash, Lane must put aside his concern for his wife and put up with the presence of his new partner to identify and find the woman before it's too late.
Despite the set-up, the movie sometimes lacks suspense. We see too many nights end with Nelson tending to his wife and Sawa musing over the case at home or in his pajamas. It might have helped to feel personally invested in the safety of the young woman - aside from images of her terrified face, we don't learn anything about her until about halfway through the movie. The filmmakers focused more on the team as they investigated the case.
