I like to call this scene SNEAK ATTACK CANGEL because it is. And to get entirely meta for a second, because who am I and because this scene requires it, when we talk about C/A as a ship it has to accompany the recognition that this ship? These kids? Are embedded in the mythology of the show. Cordelia is the conduit from day one - at first to humanity, then to the Powers, and, ultimately, to Angel’s way out. Their relationship is the narrative arc of this show. And even in season five, a season that at face value functions in many ways in the absence of them, ultimately, culminates with the once again emphasizing the necessity of them, how essential she is to his mission and how much he needs her to function. Even in her absence, the show is drenched in them. And while I wish beyond all measure that she had been there this season, the fact nonetheless remains that with the vision she gives Angel in that parting kiss, she gives him back his path. She gives him the mission again - which, remember, was her purpose from day one. When we talk about the mythological structure of AtS, therefore, we are explicitly talking about Angel/Cordelia, and if you watch AtS and you don’t ship them you actually will not understand the narrative at all, not completely. She is in him, he is this show as much as Buffy is hers (hence, Angel: The Series), and to ignore that narrative or demonize it (as this fandom tends to do for reasons I find entirely inexplicable and generally irrational) is to remove yourself from a truly magnificent love story, narrative, characterization, show, mythos. And this moment? This silence in him when he says this entire suicide mission began with her? That just proves it.
